With so many counsellors available, how do you search for a therapist who would be a good fit for you?
Finding the right counsellor can be difficult because not only will your preferences for a counsellor be unique, but each mental health provider will also be unique in terms of their approach, training, techniques, and personality.
Studies have shown that the therapeutic relationship is the most healing and effective aspect of therapy, which means that finding the right therapist is critical to achieving a successful therapeutic outcome.
Research and experience have demonstrated that the relationship between client and counsellor is crucial in determining the success of your therapy experience. A good client-counsellor relationship is critical to help you get the most out of counselling, so it makes sense for you to feel safe and comfortable engaging with your therapist.
This is why I offer a free 15-minute consultation to meet and talk with me before committing (or not committing) to starting counselling with me. This initial consultation will help you get a general sense of who I am as a counsellor and gauge whether I might be a good fit for your needs. As well, you will have an opportunity to ask me any questions you might have about the counselling process so that you can make an informed choice about therapy before booking a full appointment.
Therapy is challenging work and it is important that you, as the client, feel that the therapist you choose to work with is the right fit.
The initial consultation is also an opportunity for me to decide as the therapist whether I am the right fit for you – meaning, do I have the training, experience, and clinical competence to help you with the problem or issue that brings you to therapy? If not, I will offer to connect you with someone who might be a better fit.
Whether you’re brand new to counselling and wondering what it might feel like, or want to make sure that you feel comfortable with a new counsellor, a free initial consultation is a convenient way for us to meet and introduce ourselves to each other.
